Lloyd Smyth was an analytical chemist who, having been appointed foundation Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, established a department renowned internationally for its expertise in analytical spectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography and electrochemical analysis. He is credited with establishing analytical chemistry as an accepted discipline of chemistry in Australia. His research ranged from formaldehyde resin adhesives and trace element and radiochemical analysis, to the lead burden in the blood of Sydney school children and the accuracy of breathalysers. Smyth was President of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute from 1969 to 1970.
