In 1972 the Museum Department and State Planning Office merged to form the Office of Environment and Conservation (1972 - 1975). The Museum Department had previously reported to the Minister for Education and the State Planning Office (1967 - 1978) was part of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet [I] (1965 - 1972). The Department of Environment and Conservation (1972 - 1975) oversaw the Museum Board of South Australia, the Environment Protection Council, state planning, national parks and wildlife and for a short period in 1973 tourism. In 1976 the Museum Board of South Australia began reporting to the Minister of Education and the Botanic Gardens Department was brought into the Department of Environment and Conservation (1972 - 1975). In 1976 the department was renamed the Department for the Environment (1976 - 1981).
