Britain appointed a Surveyor-General and Royal Commissioner to survey and "sell" lands in South Australia. These roles were operational by 1836. When South Australia received responsible self-government in 1857 the Survey and Crown Lands Department was established (1857 - 1917) with the Survey-General as its head. The Surveyor-General's Office continued to operate within the Survey and Crown Lands Department until 1917. This new Department was the birth place of a numerous South Australian government functions including irrigation, agriculture, mining, roads, and forestry. Over time these functions where shed from the Survey and Crown Lands Department and formed independent departments. In 1917 the Survey and Crown Lands Department (1857 - 1917) was renamed the Lands and Survey Department (1917 - 1930). Frome, Edward Charles (1802 - 1890)
