In 1973 he established volunteer-based survey of waterbirds in Western Port, which is now Australia's longest-running survey of diverse waterbirds in complex ecosystems. In his work for several Victorian Government organisations he has been influential in policy-making for forest management, fire ecology and biodiversity conservation programs.
