Joy Thompson joined the National Herbarium of New South Wales as a flora writer and specimen curator in 1946, and was Honorary Research Associate at the Herbarium from 1982 to 2009. In writing material for the new <span style="font-style:italic">Flora of New South Wales</span> she wrote principally on the families Polygalaceae, Tremandraceae and Fabaceae, Conifers, and small mostly aquatic monocotyledonous families. She was particularly interested in alpine and sub-alpine plants, substantial collections of which she made over a period of 30 years from 1965 and which are now in the Herbarium. Thompson published descriptions of more than 90 new taxa.
