Much of his research was devoted to the search for improved precision in optical instruments. He was involved in international program to find a wavelength standard of length to replace the Prototype metre and represented Australia on the Consultative Committee for the Definition of the Metre from its inception to his retirement. Other work focused on the development of lasers and the properties of dielectric films.
