Although the formation of this agency requires further research the role of Inspector General a 1913 piece of legislation called The Mental Defectives Act 1913 makes provision for the Governor to "appoint a medical practitioner to be Inspector-General of Hospitals" (p.19). There is little information on how this role differed from the Colonial Surgeon. In 1940 the Inspector General of Hospitals Office was abolished under the Public Services Act 1936 - 1938 and the Hospitals Department created.
