He managed a number of international post-harvest entomology projects for the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Champ was active in the Entomological Society of Queensland, being President in 1961. He was instrumental in moves to establish a national entomological society, leading to the foundation of the Australian Entomological Society (AES) in 1965. In 1962 Champ became founding Editor of the Journal of the Entomological Society of Queensland which, on the establishment of the AES, transformed into the Journal of the Australian Entomological Society.
