<biogHist>
The Harbour Department was established in 1843 replacing the Department of the Harbour Master (1838 - 1843). Through out the period of its existence (1843 - 1860) the Harbour Department shared its responsibilities for shipping and nautical science with two other entities. Trinity House of Port Adelaide (1852 - 1860) and Port Adelaide Harbor Trust (1854 - 1860). According to the State Records of South Australia the Trinity House of Port Adelaide paid for "pilots, steam tug, lighthouse, lightship, powder magazine" services. It appears the Port Adelaide Harbor Trust (1854 - 1860) was mostly focused on financing deepening operations of the port. In 1860 the Harbour Department (1834 - 1860), Trinity House of Port Adelaide (1852 - 1860) and Port Adelaide Harbor Trust (1854 -1860) became a single entity The Marine Board (1860 - 1925).
<p>The Trinity House of Port Adelaide was modelled explicitly on the English institution Trinity House incorporated in 1514 by Henry VIII to regulate and develop shipping, navigation and pilotage.</p>
