He was a staunch advocate for indigenous cultural heritage, including the preservation of important archaeological sites. During he 1980s and 1990s he was manager University of Queensland Archaeological Services Unit and worked for the Cultural Heritage Branch of the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage.
