Tony Rose was a naturalist and ornithologist who came to Australia in the 1950s, already skilled in taxidermy and the analysis of stomach contents and pellets of birds. His involvement in the natural history of New South Wales varied from the compilation of flora and fauna lists for the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the rediscovery of the Southern Brown Bandicoot in the Sydney region, to an association with the Australian Museum of over 50 years. Rose's main interest was in the diet of birds, particularly raptors, and he published the majority of Australian papers on raptor diet from the 1990s. He regularly identified prey items for other researchers using his private collection of animal parts. In 2016 he was awarded the J. N. Hobbs Memorial Medal for outstanding contributions to Australasian ornithology by an amateur ornithologist by Birdlife Australia.
