Andrew Black is a neurologist who was Head of Neurology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide from 1987 to 1996 and who specialised in the treatment of epilepsy. His interest in birds led him to join the South Australian Ornithological Association, of which he was President from 1974 to 1976, and the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union. He became particularly interested in grasswrens, publishing over 50 papers and the book <span style="font-style:italic">Grasswrens, Australian outback identities</span> (2017) with P. Gower. Black's concern for unrestrained clearance of native vegetation resulted in his joining the Nature Conservation Society of South Australia and similar organisations. He was appointed to South Australian Government authorities which had responsibility for assessing applications for clearance under several Acts. In 2018 Black was awarded the J. N. Hobbs Memorial Medal by Birdlife Australia for his significant contributions to ornithology.
