In 2011 the decision was taken to merge with Birds Australia to become Birdlife Australia, with effect from 1 January 2012, an acknowledgement by members of both organisations of the convergence of their interests. The journal Australian field ornithology continued to be published by Bird Observation and Conservation Australia.
