DPAW was responsible for Western Australia's national marine and terrestrial parks, forests, and reserves as well as general conservation of Western Australian fauna and flora. In 2017 DPAW was amalgamated with the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Zoological Parks Authority and the Rottnest Island Authority resulting in the creation of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (2017 - ).
