John Prescott was a geographer whose research focused mainly on international boundaries, particularly marine boundaries. His studies covered border disputes across southern Asia, the Pacific Ocean and Africa, as well as Australian Aboriginal concepts of territory and borders. Prescott's expertise was called on as advisor to government and in cases involving native title claims to seas and seabeds, and maritime boundary cases before the International Court of Justice and the United States Supreme Court. Among his publications were the landmark books <span style="font-style:italic">The maritime political boundaries of the world</span> (2006) with Clive Schofield, and <span style="font-style:italic">International frontiers and boundaries</span> (2008) with Gillian Triggs. Prescott was Professor of Geography at the University of Melbourne from 1986 to 1996.
