His studies covered border disputes across southern Asia, the Pacific Ocean and Africa, as well as Australian Aboriginal concepts of territory and borders. Prescott's expertise was called on as advisor to government and in cases involving native title claims to seas and seabeds, and maritime boundary cases before the International Court of Justice and the United States Supreme Court. Among his publications were the landmark books The maritime political boundaries of the world (2006) with Clive Schofield, and International frontiers and boundaries (2008) with Gillian Triggs.
