The Tasmanian Institution of Engineers was established in 1918.

In 1919, the Tasmanian Institution of Engineers amalgamated with other existing engineering associations, to form the "Institution of Engineers, Australia" as one of the Institution's eleven 'Foundation Societies', and its members transferred to the Institution as foundation Associate Members.
<p>The Tasmanian Institution of Engineers was founded by John Butters who called a meeting on 14 May 1918 at the Town Hall, Hobart. The objects of the organization were agreed, provisional members were appointed, and a resolution was passed agreeing to the "principle of the consolidation of Australian engineering societies into one Australian institution". Effectively forming a local group that could negotiate and merge with the proposed national Institution of Engineers, Australia.</p>
<p>The agreed objects of the association were "The advancement of engineering knowledge and practice, and the maintenance of a high professional standard among its members by (a) the holding of meetings for the presentation and discussion of papers on engineering and allied subjects; (b) the promotion of social and professional intercourse among its members; (c) the promotion of concerted action for the furtherance of engineering interests generally".</p>
<p>However, it appears that there weren't any local learned activities until after the Institution of Engineers, Australia was formed, and the Tasmanian Division was established in the following years.</p>
