The <span style="font-style:italic">Novara</span> Expedition was the first scientific expedition of the Austrian Navy to circumnavigate the world. Members of the scientific contingent included geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter and zoologist Georg von Frauenfeld. In November 1858 the expedition spent some time in Sydney and later in New Zealand. Major results of the expedition were oceanographic studies in the South Pacific, Hochstetter's geological survey in New Zealand, and the first scientific study of the coca plant. In addition over 26,000 biological and cultural specimens were collected and lodged in Austrian museums. The reports of the expedition were published in 21 volumes between 1861 and 1875.
