Her chief study is of the biota of the native forest surrounding her residence in northern Tasmania. In documenting the biodiversity at specific locations Lloyd contributed to the permanent conservation of significant areas of land. In 2005 she began year-long study of the dawn chorus of forest birds. This developed into "A sound idea", an innovative project, involving 90 participants in 160 locations, to make recordings of bird song. Since 2010 Lloyd has been studying acellular slime moulds (Myxomycetes), making hundreds of collections and greatly expanding our understanding of these organisms. She has been a keen participant in community-based natural history groups, including Fungimap and the Central North Field Naturalists. Among her many publications are The feathered tribes of Van Diemen's Land (2015) and Where the slime mould creeps: the fascinating world of Myxomycetes (2014, 2nd edition 2018).
