Edward Giles Stone MIEAust MInstCE, was an early, innovative pioneer in reinforced concrete design and construction in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, and was a partner in the firm Stone and Siddely, of Sydney. Through his significant use of the Considère system and in wrapping of the reinforcement with heavy helical ligatures; his use of pre-cast tilt slabs, panels, pipes and other pre-cast elements build under his own patented pneumatic systems; and the construction of large concrete silos. However, the spectacular large spans and daring designs of the Dennys Lascelles Austin wool store at Geelong, the Barwon Sewer Aqueduct over the Barwon River, Geelong, and the Launceston Railway Workshops, are his most significant works. He also pioneered reinforced concrete pontoons and ships, and constructed for the Sydney Harbour Trust, what is believed to have been the largest floating pontoons in the world at the time.
