John Stanisic is one of Australia's leading experts on the systematics and biogeography of snails, particularly their association with rainforests and limestone, He was Curator of Molluscs at the Queensland Museum from 1980 to 2006. During this time he expanded the Museum's mollusc collections to over 200,000 specimens, making it the most significant such collection in Australia. Stanisic published descriptions of over 400 new species and 100 new genera of Australian snails. Among his publications is <span style="font-style:italic">Australian land snails</span> (2 volumes, 2010, 2nd edition 2017). Since retiring from the Museum Stanisic has been Director and Principal Biodiversity Scientist with Biodiversity and Management Pty Ltd, a specialist fauna and habitat consultancy firm. He conducts large-scale biodiversity surveys with a focus on the use of invertebrates as indicators of environmental health.
