Prior to this point management of water and related public utilities had been divided between two administrative units responsible for different regions of Western Australia. The Water Authority of Western Australia consolidated this work under one organisational body. In 1996 the statutory authority, Water Authority of Western Australia, was replaced by a new corporate body, the Water Corporation (1996 - ).
