The new Metropolitan Water Authority (1982 - 1985) retained all the same functions and powers as its predecessor and over saw the provision of drinking water, drainage and sewerage management in metropolitan regions of Western Australia. In 1985 the Public Works Department (1901 - 1985) was dissolved and its responsibility for rural and country water, sewerage and drainage was merged with the Metropolitan Water Authority (1982 - 1985) leading to the creation of the Water Authority of Western Australia (1985 - 1996).
