After a career of more than 30 years at the University of Cambridge, during which time he was second Director of the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis, he returned to Melbourne to join the Bio21 Institute. Holmes has published over 500 papers and made over 52 patent applications. He has received numerous awards for his research.
