In 1919, the South Australian Institute of Engineers amalgamated with other existing engineering associations, to form the "Institution of Engineers, Australia" as one of the Institution's eleven 'Foundation Societies', and its members transferred to the Institution as foundation Associate Members.

The inaugural meeting of the South Australian Institute of Engineers was held at the Prince of Wales Theatre, University of Adelaide on the 2nd April 1913, when the 49 intending members present decided to establish the organisation, and elected the first officers for the ensuing year. Within a short period, 66 foundation members were admitted to the Institute.

The Institute held regular meetings and excursions, and published two volumes of Biennial Proceedings, 1913-1915 and 1916-1917.

In 1917 it was one of first engineering organisation to lobby for the formation of a nation engineering body to represent all states and all engineering disciplines.
