The Environment Department was responsible for the management, protection and restoration of Queensland's natural environment including both marine and land ecosystems. It was also responsible for the conservation of cultural heritage locations. In addition to the departments environmental concerns the Queensland National Archives lists the recognition of "the traditional rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people", it is unclear which rights this pertains to. In 1998 it became the Environment and Heritage Department (II) (1998).
