In 1998 Queensland's Environment and Heritage Department (II) (1998) was renamed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It was responsible for the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, biodiversity research, management and protection of Queensland's cultural and environmental heritage, monitoring and preventing pollution. Over time the EPA took on more functions, in 2003 the Beach Protection Authority (1968 - 2003) was dissolved and its functions transferred to the Environmental Protection Agency. Then in 2007 it took on responsibility for climate change policy and science from the Department of Natural Resources and Water (2006 - 2009). In 2009 the EPA merged with the Department of Natural Resources and Water (2006 - 2009) to form the Department of Environment and Resource Management (2009 - 2012).
