Originally founded as a response to the Great Depression (c.1929 - c.1939) it played two core roles, it collected and communicated statistics on Queensland's economic state, and it administered and oversaw multiple public works projects which aimed to alleviate unemployment and boost regional development. Its initiatives spanned from water conservation to infrastructure construction. By 1946 most of the public works responsibilities had been transferred to the Co-Ordinator General of Public Works. The Bureau of Industry (I) was officially dissolved in 1947 and replaced with another Bureau of Industry (II) that focused on the statistical functions of its predecessor.
