He has made significant scientific findings on the impacts of deforestation, logging, hunting, wildfires, road expansion and climatic change on tropical ecosystems and biodiversity. Other interests include the drivers of global amphibian decline. Laurance is Distinguished Research Professor at James Cook University and was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2015.
