Wilhelm Hillebrand was a physician who came to South Australia and established a medical practice in Adelaide in 1849. He collected plants in the south east of the colony and made the acquaintance of Ferdinand Mueller at this time. In 1851 Hillebrand settled in Hawaii and made a study of the indigenous flora. The National Herbarium of Victoria holds some of Hillebrand's Australian specimens and several hundred of his Hawaiian specimens, received both from Hillebrand c.1865 and distributed as duplicates from the Berlin Herbarium.
