Christine Charles is known as an international authority on ion acceleration in expanding magnetised plasmas and its application to space engines and materials processing. Her discoveries have resulted in the new fields of current-free double layer physics, and new generation space propulsion plasma engines. Charles is the Head of the Space Plasma, Power and Propulsion Laboratory at the Australian National University and is active in popularising science on television and radio and by giving public lectures. She was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2015.
