William Brackendridge was a nurseryman and botanist. Born in Scotland he migrated to the United States of America. Between 1838 and 1842 he was part of the American Wilkes Expedition to explore, chart, and document lands in the Pacific ocean and North pole. Part of this expedition included a stop in Sydney Australia where Brackendridge collected botanical specimens. His official role was assistant botanist but it appears he preformed most of the botanical work both during and after the expedition.
