He was self-taught, his passion for spiders being sparked by observing orb-weaving spiders in Papua New Guinea while serving with the Australian Imperial Forces during World War II. For many years he identified spiders for doctors and the ambulance service in the Rockhampton area. Wallace often accompanied Queensland Museum scientists in their field excursions. He formed an arachnology society in Rockhampton and was the long-term editor of its newsletter. Wallace's collection of over 300 spider specimens was lodged with the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.
