Born in country New South Wales in 1895 Margaret Keats grew up caring for cattle on her family property. To provide better care to cattle she enrolled in the Melbourne University Veterinary School in 1918 graduating in 1922. In 1925 Keats was employed as a Inspector of Stock on the New South Wales - Victoria Border. She went on to practice in Kerang Victoria until her death in 1970.

Margaret Keats was the first woman to graduate from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
