As Head of the Physics Section of the South Australian Anti-Cancer Foundation he was at the forefront of the use of medical physics in cancer treatment and set up South Australia's first radiation protection and monitoring service. His most important work was establishing radiation dosimetry standards fundamental to radiotherapy which were used across Australia. Worthley was active in establishing profession bodies for medical physicists, becoming a Life Member of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine in 1985.
