During 23 years with the CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research in Western Australia he worked initially on the ecology of birds, including research leading to management programs for several endangered species. He then concentrated on small vertebrates in the Western Australian wheatbelt. Smith was an expert on the ecology and biology of Australian scorpions.
