She made pioneering studies of lakes in Australia and New Zealand. Jolly was the first biologist appointed to the Sydney Metropolitan Water, Sewage and Drainage Board, stationed at Warragamba Dam where her work included the early detection of phytoplanktonic blooms. She played a leading role in the foundation of the Australian Society for Limnology, being President from 1967 to 1968.
