Hilary Jolly was a freshwater biologist whose research focused on the taxonomy and ecology of planktonic crustaceans, the vertical migratory behaviour of plankton and the physics and chemistry of lakes. She made pioneering studies of lakes in Australia and New Zealand. Jolly was the first biologist appointed to the Sydney Metropolitan Water, Sewage and Drainage Board, stationed at Warragamba Dam where her work included the early detection of phytoplanktonic blooms. She played a leading role in the foundation of the Australian Society for Limnology, being President from 1967 to 1968. In 1973 the Society inaugurated the Jolly Award for outstanding contribution to Australian Limnology.
