His fieldwork across tropical Australia, southeast Asia and Pacific islands resulted in an extensive collection at the Queensland Museum of sessile marine invertebrates, a significant proportion being new to science. Hooper has published descriptions of over 600 new species, ten new genera and two new families of sponges.
