The centre drew on existing expertise from the Austin Hospital and the international Ludwig Institute. Oversight was officially transferred to ONJCWC from the Ludwig Institute in the early to mid 2010s. In addition to its relationships with Austin Hospital and the Ludwig Institute ONJCWC also works closely with La Trobe University. Together ONJCWC's research arm the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and La Trobe Universities Institute of Molecular Science (LIMS) secured a $2million grant from the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) in 2018 to develop a state-of-the-art Tumour Imaging Centre.
