Over the years it has conducted research, advocated for, and provided clinical and psychosocial services to young people experiencing severe forms of mental ill health.

Over its history Orygen has continued to focus on young people but has widened the scope of conditions it addresses. Beginning with the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) for young people experiencing psychosis for the first time or deemed at risk of psychosis, to major mood disorders under the Centre for Young People's Mental Health (CYPMH) and Older Adolescent Service, to emerging personality disorders (HYPE).

Up until 2006 Orygen was focused on severe mental ill-health, but in 2006 partnered with The University of Melbourne to establish Headspace.
