He joined he School of Botany at the University of New South Wales in 1978, later becoming the Head of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Among his publications have been Saltmarsh ecology (1990) and Australian rainforests (1992). Adam has played a central role in environmental policy development in New South Wales through his long-term membership of the Nature Conservation Council, National Parks advisory committees and the Land and Environment Court.
