Veena Sahajwalla is renowned for her research into the properties of carbon-bearing materials. Her work has revolutionised recycling science by demonstrating that waste plastics and rubber under high-temperature conditions can be a partial substitute for coal and coke in the manufacture of iron, steel and ceramics. Sahajwalla is Director of the Sustainable Materials Research and Technology Centre at the University of New South Wales.
