She has fostered the development and commercialisation of Australian vaccine technologies and placed Australia in the forefront of global influenza surveillance, research and pandemic preparedness. Her research was particularly into the regulation of T lymphocyte effector function. Kelso was CEO of the CRC for Vaccine Technology and of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research in Influenza, and in 2015 was appointed CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council.
