As head of the School of Oenology and Viticulture at Roseworthy Agricultural Institute, South Australia, he transformed the teaching of viticulture and oenology from a diploma to a degree course, later introducing a graduate diploma. His research ranged across ethanol production, the deposition of potassium bitartrate in wine, treating wine with ion-exchange resins, and the metal content of wine.
