He has led the development and application of the genome-characterisation of microbiomes, transforming understanding of microbial ecology and evolution. Between 2004 and 2010 Hugenholtz headed the Microbial Ecology and Metagenomics Programs at the DOE Joint Genome Institute in California. He returned to Australia in 2010 to become the founding Director of the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics at the University of Queensland.
