Jack Thomas trained as a pharmacist at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He migrated to Australia in 1963 to join the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney, retiring in 1978 as Head of the Department. In his teaching he highlighted the relevance of medicinal chemistry in a clinical setting. His research was in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical chemistry, clinical toxicology and clinical pharmakinetics, and included a landmark series of clinical pharmacology studies on local anaesthetics conducted with Colin Climie at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney. Thomas was well-regarded for his contributions to continuing education for pharmacists and for his leadership roles in professional organisations. He was course director for the Off Shore Conferences run by the Pharmaceutical Society of New South Wales from 1977 to 1994, and was consulting editor of <span style="font-style:italic">Australian journal of pharmacy</span> and <span style="font-style:italic">Australian Pharmaceutical Prescriptions Guide</span>.
