Karl Rieckmann is noted for his research into malaria, parasitology, drug resistance and pharmacology. For eight years he worked in Papua New Guinea on trials to eliminate malaria and elephantitis, another disease where mosquitos are the vectors, followed by in the United States assessing drug-resistance of malarial parasites. Between 1989 and 2006 he was Director of the Army Malaria Research Unit (later the Australian Army Research Institution) in Brisbane. Rieckmann served for 32 years on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Malaria. Among his research publications are papers on the history of malaria research in Australia.
