After nearly 40 years at the University of New England, he retired as Professor of Mathematics in 1987. He served the University as Dean of the Faculty of Science, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, and as a member of the University Council for three 6-year terms. Horadam's interest in the teaching of mathematics in schools, stemming from his early career, resulted in a 25-year term as a member of the New South Wales Government secondary mathematics syllabus committee. Among his many publications were well-regarded texts for schools and undergraduates.
