Marie Wehl, wildflower painter and plant collector, was the daughter of Clara Wehl and niece of Ferdinand von Mueller. Like her mother Clara, sister Louise and other members of her family, she collected plant specimens and sent them to Mueller in Melbourne. With the encouragement of her uncle, she started to collect fungi and to paint them in their living state. Many of the specimens, with Marie's paintings, were sent by Mueller to Mordecai Cooke in the United Kingdom for identification. Cooke appreciated both quality of the specimens and the information contained within the paintings. The National Herbarium of Victoria has Marie's paintings, annotated by Cooke, with their matching specimen.
