During this time he led the Bureau's Antarctic program, overseeing and participating in major field mapping projects in remote areas. He spent seven seasons in Antarctica. He recognition of the value of international collaborations led to a number of joint publications including Geology of the Prince Charles Mountains, Antarctica (2001). Tingey served as Secretary of the Scientific Committee of the Antarctic Research Working Group on Geology for eight years. In 1990 he was awarded the Australian Antarctic Medal.
