<biogHist>
The Lands and Surveys Department was responsible for the management of the Crown Lands and surveying. The Department had multiple branches including the Mines Branch (1883 - 1894), Tasmanian Government Railways (1872 - 1939), and the Forestry Department (1921 - 1994). Some of these branches went on to become departments in their own standing or were merged with existing departments. In 1970 the Lands and Surveys Department was split into two creating the Lands Department (1970 - 1987) and later the National Parks and Wildlife Service (1971 - 1987).
